The hardest part of a car accident can be its aftermath
Perhaps with the exception of participants in a destruction derby, no one gets behind the wheel of a car anticipating getting into a collision with another vehicle. It is safe to say that when people think about the idea of a car accident, their thoughts gravitate to the accident itself, to the moment of impact.
But an auto accident is something that can actually last for much longer than the few seconds of the crash.
Consider a scenario in which another car hits yours, and you suffer a neck or spinal cord injury. You will likely require significant ongoing medical treatment and rehabilitation. You may be subject to long-term pain. You may have to miss work. Your insurance may not cover all of the expenses. You may be unable to even participate in the basic activities of life, and your relationship with your loved ones can suffer.
What is more, when you try to work through the insurance claim process you might discover that the driver of the other vehicle remembers the accident differently. He or she can claim that it was your fault, or even file a lawsuit against you. You start receiving correspondence and phone calls from the other person’s insurer, or even an attorney for that insurer. They are not sympathetic.
And that is when you discover that an injury-producing car accident is not so much an incident as a process. One in which you will need an ally at your side to make sure that you emerge from it in the best position possible medically, financially and legally.
