Comedian fighting traumatic brain injury after tragic trucking accident
Tracy Morgan continues to recover from injuries suffered in a tragic truck accident. It was recently reported that he is also recovering from a brain injury from this crash.
Comedian Tracy Morgan, of SNL and 30 Rock fame, is still recovering months after getting rear-ended by a semi-truck. The accident gained the attention of media outlets throughout the country. Morgan and his fellow passengers were returning from a show in Delaware when a Wal-Mart truck struck their van. The truck was reportedly traveling 65 mph in a construction zone with a speed limit of 45 mph. The driver of the Wal-Mart truck is also accused of not sleeping for over 24 hours prior to the accident, a violation of law in the state the accident occurred.
The crash resulted in the death of fellow comedian and comic writer James “Jimmy Mack” McNair. Three passengers, including Morgan, were injured, two of which suffered serious injuries. Morgan was in a hospital and underwent rehabilitation for several weeks following the crash. In addition, it was recently reported that Morgan is still recovering and is suffering from a traumatic brain injury.
More on traumatic brain injuries
A report from ABC News explains that the actor may never be the “Tracy Morgan he once was.” Unfortunately, this can be true for anyone who suffers from a traumatic brain injury, or TBI. There are many symptoms connected to this type of injury. Some of the more common, immediate symptoms include loss of consciousness, persistent headaches and confusion. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explains that the severity of these injuries can have an impact on life long after the accident. Long-term symptoms can include issues with the victim’s:
- Thought process. A victim may have problems with his or her memory or with the ability to reason after suffering from a TBI.
- Language skills. Difficulties with communication and understanding are also reported.
- Emotional issues. Problems with depression, anxiety, aggression and personality changes may also occur.
These injuries have also been connected to an increased risk of developing Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and other brain disorders later in life.
Medical experts with Mayo Clinic note that car or truck accidents, like the 18 wheeler wreck which injured Tracy Morgan, are a common cause of traumatic brain injuries. In addition, falling down steps, off ladders, out of bed and other falls can also contribute to these types of injuries. TBI’s are also commonly caused by violent acts such as domestic assault and child abuse, accounting for about 20 percent of TBI’s.
Legal counsel can help
Those who are involved in accidents that lead to injuries like a TBI may be eligible to receive compensation to help cover the cost of rehabilitation, treatment and associated expenses. Moving forward with a suit to receive this compensation can be difficult, as Tracy Morgan’s case illustrates. Recent reports note that Wal-Mart is fighting back, claiming Morgan and his fellow passengers were not properly wearing their seatbelts and that this contributed to their injuries.
Such defense tactics are not uncommon. As a result, victims are wise to seek the counsel of an experienced personal injury attorney. Your lawyer will review your case and work to better ensure a more favorable outcome.
